A dedicated volunteer who manages the community café at St Peter’s Hospital in Maldon has been awarded the most prestigious prize at the first Pride of Maldon Awards.

Julie Taylor, a volunteer who runs the community café at St Peter’s, scooped the main prize at the awards for her inspiring efforts and dedication.

Julie and her team of volunteers not only cook and serve, but also hold fund raising activities such as raffles, parties, prize bingo, a library, knit and natter groups and support local charities.

The presentation of the main award followed a speech about what makes the town so special from Plume Academy headteacher, Carl Wakefield.

The event recognised inspiring community volunteers and dedicated residents across Maldon that dedicate their time and effort to help the community. There were more than 70 nominations for the nine awards for work conducted over the past year.

The Mayor of Maldon Jeanette Stilts invited more than 100 volunteers to join her in celebrating Maldon’s unsung heroes that work behind the scenes to contribute to the town.

Mayor Jeanetter Stilts said: “We should all be proud of Julie Taylor, for without her, Maldon would be so much the poorer.”

The event was held on Friday 13 April at Maldon Town Hall.

Other winners included the community impact award which was awarded to Maldon and Dengie Stroke Support and Carers’ Group and Tracey Temme who picked up the long service volunteer certificate for her work with the Sea Cadets.

Last month, Julie received special recognition in the Outstanding Volunteer Award category at the Provide Annual Staff Awards. The award recognised her hard work and dedication and her welcoming, cheerful manner when meeting staff, patients and the local community.

Provide is a community interest company and delivers community health and care services across Essex, outer north east London, and East Anglia. Provide staff deliver services from community hospitals including St Peter’s Hospital in Maldon.
